Hermes Agent Guide

What it does

Hermes Agent is an agent harness from Nous Research that carries out instructions by reading and writing files and running commands on your machine. It runs as a community project rather than a single company's commercial service, so it documents install paths and platform support openly.

The AI in this role does not just answer in a chat window: it runs in a terminal (a screen where you type commands to control the computer directly) and actually creates files and runs code. Once you give it an instruction, it chains several steps together on its own.

When it fits

It works well for teams that can follow the documented install methods and operating systems as published. If your setup is an Intel Mac or you plan to install through Homebrew or pip, check support status first before committing to it.

When it doesn't fit

The limitations below come from the vendor's own official documentation, not our evaluation. As of 2026-09-22

Hermes publishes a tiered support matrix that includes a named Unsupported list. Intel Macs, Homebrew installs, pip or PyPI installs, and AUR fall into that unsupported category, and fixes for issues there will not be accepted. Windows and Android through Termux are supported, but with some features missing.
